I have been promising my 17 year old son a Mother/Son trip…so he chose to join me on a trip to the Dominican Republic. Last year, the Dominican Republic had been receiving some bad publicity and I was a little nervous about going…but we decided that we would keep our plans and check out the island. I am so glad that we did. Never once did we feel in danger, never did we feel unsafe. We had an amazing time and loved every moment that we spent in the Dominican Republic.
We arrived on Saturday evening. As soon as we cleared customs, we were met by a representative of AmStar (our transportation shuttle) and immediately shown to a van ready to take us to our resort. They handed us each a bottle of water and we were off. Our “home” while we were there was the Dreams Punta Cana, All-Inclusive resort. We chose this one because it was a family all-inclusive and had more to offer my teenage son. The ride from the airport was about 30 minutes and our guide pointed out several things of interest along the way and also answered the many questions that I had. We pulled up to the resort, our luggage was taken for us and we were checked in. Within about 15 minutes we had our room keys and were heading to our room.
The resort was GORGEOUS!! Our room was upgraded to a Club Preferred suite so we had a little extra space and the club level service is a nice perk as well! Since it was getting late, we quickly dropped our carryons in the room and went to find food…teenage boys MUST EAT! The first night we just decided to do the World Cafe buffet since we were hungry and didn’t know our way around the resort yet. There were a lot of options and we enjoyed our meal! After dinner we walked around the resort a little and then decided to call it an early evening since it had been a long day of traveling.
On Sunday, we slept until about 8 and then went to breakfast. We again ate at the World Cafe. The breakfast was amazing with a lot of options, surely something for everyone! After breakfast, we headed to the beach, grabbed a cabana (in the Club Preferred section of the beach…another nice perk) and spent some time enjoying the sand, sun and ocean! After a couple of hours, my son decided to go check out the Core Zone (teen club) while I continued to enjoy my book on the beach. While he was in the club, I treated myself to a massage….and what a treat that was….15 minute body scrub, 50 minutes signature massage, 1 hour hydrotherapy and a 15 minute fish treatment. I left feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. Next, we went to dinner. We decided to try out the Italian restaurant, Portifino. The food was great, but for a 17 year old boy, there wasn’t nearly enough, so we also ended up at the buffet again so he could fill up and I drank coffee while eating dessert. After dinner, we watched the Magic Show in the theater.
Monday brought more sunshine and today we decided to spend our time in the pool. Rain came in a few times, but as soon as it moved in, it moved out and the sun came back out. It was a beautiful day and we just enjoyed relaxing. He went back to the teen club and spent some time playing pool, doing archery and playing the PS4. For dinner we decided to try to Asian Cuisine Restaurant, Himitsu. It was probably my favorite of the whole trip. We opted to wait for the Hibachi experience. The entertainment common to Hibachi was a little lacking, but the meal was delicious. After dinner, my son headed back to the teen club (there were more teens in there today) and I headed to see the Game Show which was the entertainment for tonight.
Tuesday started out very gloomy and pouring rain. Rain was in the forecast for the whole day, but about 10:00am, it cleared out and the rest of the day was cooler, overcast and perfect. We spent some time at the pool, having very few people around due to the weather. For dinner we tried out La Trattoria and their pizza was amazing. After dinner, Daniel returned to the teen club while I headed to the evening entertainment…the Dreams Circus.
As always happens (at least for me), vacations pass too quickly and it is time to head home before I am truly ready. I couldn’t wait to see my husband and other kids I left at home, but I sure hated to say goodbye to the Dominican Republic. This island is struggling with their tourism after their recent place in the news, but I encourage you, don’t jump to conclusions and cancel your vacation. Do some research and make an educated choice. If I ever felt like there was a real danger, I NEVER in a million years would have brought my son. But he wanted to keep our plans and so did I. I am so glad that we did and that we had the few days together in the beautiful Dominican Republic.
