Australia always seemed like a place that we would never get to go….but that all changed when Micah was diagnosed with Leukemia on August 3, 2016. As a child facing a life threatening disease, he became eligible for a Make-A-Wish. While he was in the hospital, he was told to think of something he wanted that would be different than the norm & something that might not be possible without Make-A-Wish. Micah spent many hours while in the hospital thinking of ideas. He quickly determined that he wanted to take a trip somewhere and wanted it to involve animals of some sort. He has always been an animal lover, so this did not surprise me. We started discussing the animals he might want to be a part of his wish, and the two he decided were at the top of his list were koalas and sea turtles. So after some discussion, he decided since he had seen a baby sea turtle before that a koala was what he most wanted to see. When Make-A-Wish reached out to us a a few weeks later, he told them that his wish was to go to Australia to cuddle a koala. On May 2, 2018 Micah was surprised at his reveal party letting him know that his wish had been granted.
On May 14, 2018, Micah’s Make-A-Wish journey began. On that afternoon we drove from our home to the airport. As soon as we walked into the terminal, we were greeted by two TSA officers and a Make-A-Wish volunteer. They walked with us through the entire check-in and patiently waited while the airline desk had to sort out a little hiccup. American Airline even had their check-in counter decorated for Micah. The TSA officers escorted us through security and helped us all the way to the gate. When we arrived at the gate, there were decorations, an amazing poster signed by airport staff and a candy buffet so the kids to fill bags for the long flights. Micah also received a gift bag with a koala and a boomerang.
As we were taxiing down the runway, the pilot came on the intercom announcing there was a Make-A-Wish family onboard and told us to look out the windows on the left hand side of the plane. There was a fire truck waiting for our plan and it sprayed the side of the plane as we went by. Micah is smiling from ear to ear as each new fun surprise is unfolding!
When we landed at DFW, the pilot and co-pilot came out of the cock pit to meet Micah and wish him well on his adventure. We arrived at LAX around 10:00pm. We had just enough time to grab a bite to eat and board the plane. The flight from LA to Sydney was 15 hours non-stop! We survived the 15 hour flight to Sydney. It was not too bad. We all got some sleep, ate a decent breakfast and landed in Sydney on time. After making our way through Customs and baggage claim, we boarded a bus to the domestic terminal where we boarded our last plane of the day to the Sunshine Coast
We flew from Sydney to the Sunshine Coast. We were amused on the airplane with how noisy it was…everyone was talking and laughing…just enjoying the flight. When we landed at the airport, we collected our bags, picked up our rental car and set out for our hotel. We stayed at the Breakfree Grand Pacific in Caloundra. We had a great three bedroom “apartment” (condo) with an ocean view.
